Self Help - The Wisdom Of
Purpose
What is wisdom? What is wise and
unwise? We all look for the answers about how to live a successful and happy
life. What is the meaning of our life? What should we do while here? This is
a completely normal and natural quest.
What is your life purpose? Are you, like so many people, so busy that you
barely even care? But ignoring purpose can negatively impact your wellness.
As an adult, there are really only 3 great endeavors you must focus on to
live a successful life. The Great Game of Significance is one of the 3 great
games of adulthood. This endeavor is about how to live life in a way that
matters to us, that gives us meaning and satisfaction.
Life itself makes us play the Great Game of Significance. You can be winning
at the games of money and relationship, with a nice family and a nice bank
account. But if you have ignored the game of significance, you will end up
feeling empty or like something's missing inside.
People then often try to anesthetize the feeling of emptiness by drinking or
shopping or overeating. They are trying to relieve the pain of
meaninglessness and emptiness that is gnawing at them. Pain, however, is a
teacher. Emptiness is nature's way of saying pay attention to your purpose.
Nobody asks about your purpose on the floor of the NY Stock Exchange. We all
act like money and relationships are the only two games in town. But when we
ignore our significance, what gives our lives meaning, we will find money
and relationships to be unfulfilling.
When we are losing at Significance, Life let's us know. We feel things like
boredom and a sense that something's missing from our lives. We may question
the meaning of it all. Buying more toys or going to another cocktail party
may start to seem worthless. This is Life saying pay attention to what gives
you meaning and satisfaction.
What, then, is your purpose? What gives your life a sense of meaning and
value? Well, we each must find our own answers, and thinking about it,
spending some time on these questions, can pay off big over the long term.
Two areas to look are a) finding and following your passions in life and b)
giving back and being of service.
There's much more to this issue, but it is worth spending some time on now,
rather than waiting for emptiness to knock on your door. Developing your own
sense of significance as you go through life will pay off in greater
satisfaction and well being.
Wisdom and Self Help Reflections:
What do you think the purpose of life is
for you?
How much do you feel either a sense of
meaningfulness or meaninglessness?
How often do you spend time following your
passions?
Wisdom isn't about taking action or not,
it's about knowing when to do either. Running around doing lots
of things may or may not be wise. Keeping busy can keep you from doing
what is most important. It can keep you from inner peace and harmony,
which is not wise. On the other hand, sitting around thinking
empowering thoughts without taking any action is also unwise.
And running around looking for the answers
to life can mislead you. The ego wants to believe there is an answer
out there that will solve everything, but it isn't true. Check out the
